What Apps are Available for Chronic Disease Management?

Many studies have found that mobile apps can assist patients with chronic diseases like epilepsy. A recent research article published in the journal JMIR mHealth and uHealth reviewed several apps for epilepsy and how they may help people manage their epilepsy. Check out more information below:

According to the research article, epilepsy self-management apps cover one or more of the following domains:

  • Treatment Management: Help self manage treatment through things like reminders for treatments and appointments and recommendations and advice from health care providers for treatments.
  • Medication Adherence: Help establish a medication list, including the dose and time the medication is taken, a reminder to take the medication and an alert when the prescription needed to be refilled.
  • Health Care Communication: Enable reports to be sent to health care provider(s) and help the patient and health care provider(s) to monitor side effects related to epilepsy.
  • Seizure Tracking: Enable recording of seizures including the time the seizure took place, how long the seizure lasted, the seizure type, frequency, triggers and auras and video recordings.
  • Seizure Response: Feature seizure first aid instructions, including how to help someone having a seizure and when to call 911. Also allows alert messages to be sent to caregivers with GPS location either during the aura stage or following a seizure.
  • Safety: Provide instructions how to avoid risks that are detrimental to people living with epilepsy.
  • Wellness: Provide wellness-related information such as exercise and diet, including food tracking to help identify associations with seizure activity
  • Social Support: Provide stories relating to epilepsy from others living with epilepsy and allow people to share their stories or get advice from others.
  • Coping and Stress Management: Provide information on managing stress, coping skills and relaxation exercises to help prevent seizures.
  • Proactivity: Provides advice on how to avoid situations or things that might cause seizures.
